Sustainability

"Many companies may claim that they’re plastic negative,
Here at White Lotus, we’re plastic neutral"

White Lotus sustainability

At White Lotus, we’re committed to removing 180kg of dangerous plastic waste from the ocean every year – several times the amount of plastic our business produces.

White Lotus protects our oceans

Did you know that the beauty industry creates more than 120 billion units of packaging every single year?

It’s a lot of packaging for one industry and unfortunately, only 9% of this packaging is ever recycled.

We don’t want to be responsible for these environmental impacts so we go above and beyond just cutting down on our annual plastic emissions, we’ve also partnered with CleanHub in efforts to remove plastic waste before it ever gets into our most precious ecosystem – the ocean.

Our founder, Anthony Kingston, saw first-hand how devastating plastic waste can be to our oceans during his childhood growing up on the coast. Ever since, he’s been extremely passionate about reducing waste, a passion that runs deep through White Lotus.

Partnering with CleanHub

Many companies may shout about how sustainable they are, but no one likes greenwashing. At White Lotus, we’ve taken action to do our part for the environment, which includes our partnership with CleanHub.

CleanHub’s software allows us to check and verify the plastic we stop from entering the ocean every month. We believe that traceability and accountability are key if we want to win the war on plastic, and we’re willing to be completely transparent.

At White Lotus, we also partner with Green Worms in India. Over 70 years ago, our Director’s grandfather emigrated from India and, never straying far from their roots, White Lotus wanted to partner with companies like Green Worms which prioritised disadvantaged women from local self-help groups.

These groups support women when they need it most, providing loans and savings to help members gain the independence they need and escape whatever situation they’re in.

What happens to the plastic once it’s been collected?

Once we have stopped the plastic entering the ocean, we recycle what we can and send the rest off for co-processing.

During co-processing, mineral materials are recycled while cement manufacturing seeks to recover any energy. This creates a far more environmental result compared to landfills and incineration.

For our co-processing needs, White Lotus partners with Geocycle.

Why don’t you stop using plastic?

We have tried to minimise plastic as much as possible within our business by removing plastic wrapping from our packaging, and using BPA/BPS and phthalate-free, recyclable plastic in our secondary components – like caps and pumps.

Out of all the products we produce, we have yet to create solutions for two of our products:

Derma rollers – currently there are no viable plastic alternatives we can use for the rollers or their packaging, this is mainly because of the unique hygiene issues that come with this product.

Acupressure mats and pillow – we currently use food-grade recyclable plastic spikes as no other alternative material, like bamboo, is durable enough.

Although we don’t currently have a solution, we will continue to work towards one and we’re sure that in the future we will be able to achieve our goal of using no plastic in any of our products.

Carbon offset goals

Our goal is to become a totally carbon-neutral company. We’re currently paperless and run on 75% renewable energy, but we still have a way to go.

White Lotus supports Ecosia in its tree-planting initiatives. They are a company that speaks to us personally due to their commitment to partnering with local groups to plant native trees in biodiversity hot spots.

If you want to join us on our journey to carbon neutrality, you can also personally offset the carbon emissions of every purchase you make – just select the option at checkout.
